Name any industry and gears are being used there like in agriculture or aerospace. Just imagine the extent of Gear manufacturers in India scattered all over the country in smaller or bigger companies. But what are gears really?
Gears transmit power. The torque and speed besides direction of rotation of driven mechanical parts depend upon gears. In the science and industry sense, gears refer to a toothed wheel that functions along with other parts to change the speed of the driven parts, like the wheels. The engine communicates power that is transmitted through the power train. A common machine like a bicycle could have a ten-speed gear system even though there exist no engine. Have you heard about the many different kinds of gears? Spur gear and spur rack are some of them. A spur gear is cylindrical and the teeth are parallel to the axis. A spur rack has a linear shape and it meshes with a spur gear. Internal and external gears are also commonly used in industry. Helical gears, Bevel gears and Spiral bevel gears are among the many types of gears, each with particular applications. Hypoid and worm are yet other gear types.
Two important terms with regard to gears are pitch surface and pitch angle. If the rising and falling surfaces of individual teeth in the gear wheel are leveled out, the toothless surface would be the pitch surface. The pitch surface would usually be cylinder-shaped. The pitch angle refers to the angle between the axis and the pitch surface.
Which gear would be needed for a particular machine? Many factors matter like space and shaft, gear ratio, the load, and quality level.
Spur gears, for instance, are manufactured from metals like steel and cast iron, brass, and bronze, and also from acetyl and polycarbonate. They are used in automobiles and textiles. Gear manufacturers in India wield tremendous power since gears apply to every field.
